Great Harwood: GH Rovers FC Move to new site

Members of Great Harwood Rovers Football Club are looking forward to playing matches at their new ground just off Harwood Lane in January, after plans for 217 new houses were approved for their previous home, Lyndon Playing Fields.

Council Leader, Cllr Miles Parkinson, said; “This is a superb new sports facility for Great Harwood. As part of the planning gain from the new Lyndon Park housing development, Great Harwood Rovers Football Club have moved to new football pitches just off Harwood Lane, with over half a million pounds being invested in new facilities there. Phase one of the project, four new FA and Sport England standard pitches and a car parking area is already complete, with Phase two, new changing facilities, set to be constructed later this year.”

Andy Counsell, Great Harwood Football Club Trustee, said; “We’ve been waiting a long time for this. The pitches will be a lot better than what we play on at the moment so it should mean we get more games on them.”

Great Harwood: Councillors out cleaning bus shelters

The Great Harwood Labour Councillors have been out cleaning bus shelters around the ward to improve the general appearance of neglected stops.

Cllr Jenny Nedwell said, "We are undertaking the work which people will notice and improve the look of Great Harwood. Plenty of buses went past with waves from passengers who seemed to appreciate what we are doing."

The Councillors are planning more sessions to clean road signs which have grown dirty.

Great Harwood: New Ladies Only Gym opens at Mercer Hall

Local women are invited along to check out a brand new, ladies only, toning and cardiovascular fitness suite in Great Harwood this weekend.


The Feelgood Suite, at Mercer Hall Leisure Centre, threw open its doors to women on Saturday 19th March and this new facility offers a new kind of workout, using power assisted exercise equipment, rather than resistance based equipment. It’s great for those wanting to get fit, tone up and generally improve their health and is suitable for many people with conditions such as MS, fibromyalgia, stroke, back pain, ME, arthritis, joint replacements and many others.

Cabinet member for Leisure, Cllr Ken Moss, said, "The new Ladies Only Gym not only makes use of empty space at Mercer Hall but also offers some really great workout facilities in private rooms. It's great to offer more to the public and it helps keep the leisure centre financially viable for the future."




Great Harwood Councillor, Cllr Jenny Nedwell, said; "Residents have been telling us for a while that they’d like to see a good ladies only fitness suite locally, so please come along to see for yourself these fabulous new facilities, which offer a new kind of workout in a relaxed atmosphere.”

When you walk in, the first thing you will notice is the friendly atmosphere. It’s nothing like any traditional gym I've ever attended, which is why it is perfect for women looking for something different and those who want to train in a ladies only environment."

Great Harwood: Charter Market - August 2015

Local Councillors Jenny Nedwell, Gareth Molineux and Bernadette Parkinson attended the recent Charter Market on Towngate Square.

The Market was run to raise funds for charity and the Mayor and Mayoress were also in attendance.

Great Harwood: Councillor arranges Blindfold Walk

Cllr Jenny Nedwell from Overton has arranged for a team from Guide Dogs to do an information session and guided walk around Accrington for Council officers and elected members who are interested in experiencing, for a short time, what it is like to have some form of visual difficulty.

Cllr Nedwell is registered blind and speaks openly of her disability to put others at ease. She hopes that by demonstrating guide dogs and mobility aids to others it will create a simulation experience of the difficulties people have getting around on a day to day basis.
