HBC: Holocaust Memorial Day 2016

Year 9 students from Rhyddings Business and Enterprise School along with the Mayor of Hyndburn, Councillor Marlene Haworth, the Mayoress, Mrs Dorothy Berry and Rabbi Daniel Walker gathered to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day on 27th January 2016.

Holocaust Memorial Day takes place each year on the 27th January the date that Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp, was liberated by allied soldiers in 1945.

Students took part in a poignant and moving assembly to recognise this national day of commemoration, which is dedicated to the remembrance of the millions of people who have been murdered or whose lives have been changed beyond recognition during the Holocaust, under Nazi Persecution, and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

The Mayor of Hyndburn presented the School’s Chair of Governor’s, David Brunskill, with a plaque which will be installed at the school to raise awareness of Holocaust Memorial Day and the atrocities it asks us to reflect upon.

Mayor, Cllr Marlene Haworth, said, “The Rhyddings year 9 students' assembly was extremely moving and thought provoking, its theme ‘Don’t Stand By’ enabled us to reflect on those dark events in human history and challenged us to tackle discrimination, racism and hatred. I want to say thank you to the Year 9 students and also to Rabbi Daniel Walker, who shared so many inspirational stories and who really made us all stop and think about what Holocaust Memorial Day means.”

LCC: Libraries consultation 2016

The county council continues to face an unprecedented financial challenge. Over the next five years to 2020/21 the council needs to make savings of £262m on top of those agreed within previous budget processes. This extremely difficult financial picture is the result of continued cuts in funding by Government, rising costs and rising demand for key services.

Based on current spending and forecast demand for services, the council will not have sufficient financial resources to meet its statutory obligations by April 2018, even if we no longer continue to deliver any of the non-statutory services. The council will need to rely heavily on reserves in order to set a balanced budget for 2016/17 and 2017/18.

Lancashire County Council will continue to provide a library service for the communities of Lancashire. Our vision of the library service for Lancashire is a place for people across generations to use for personal and community wellbeing, which offers flexible, physical, virtual, creative, spaces for the community. They will promote access to and use of the resources needed to encourage personal development, learning and community engagement.

Lancashire County Council wants to understand what you would like from this space. This space will be developed in response to individual community need. We are passionate about creating opportunities which give people the potential to develop in areas they choose themselves. These physical flexible spaces will be used to promote learning, arts, performance, social activity, digital inclusion, families, heritage and wellbeing. The spaces we aim to provide will enable our communities to enjoy an environment which has been tuned to their needs. The spaces need to be safe for everyone and comfortable.

We value your views about the library service you want and encourage you to fill in this questionnaire and express your comments in the space provided:

HBC: Over 70 people attend microchipping event

Over seventy dog owners brought their dogs along to a free micro chipping session in Great Harwood on Wednesday 27th January.

The Council’s Dog Warden service again joined forces with the Dog’s Trust to offer another microchipping session at the Town Hall Square in Great Harwood, ahead of the changes to the law on 6th April, where micro chipping will be compulsory for all dog owners in England.

Micro chipping your pet gives them the best chance of being identified and returned to you if they become lost or stolen. A tiny microchip is inserted under the animal’s skin, which gives the pet their own unique code. The microchip can be scanned and matched to the owner’s contact details, which are kept on a database.

Cllr Paul Cox, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services and Deputy Leader of the Council said; “The law is changing and from 6th April micro chipping will be compulsory for all dog owners in England, so it’s great that so many owners came along yesterday to get their dogs micro chipped.”

Rishton: Tottleworth Road junction issues

Several complaints have been made to the Rishton Councillors regarding the junction of Tottleworth Road and Hermitage Street. The road markings on a small hatched area are now less defined and this occasionally leads to cars parking there, making it hard for drivers coming out of Tottleworth Road to see oncoming traffic.

Cllr Ken Moss said, "There have been a few near-misses recently and Tottleworth residents have told me that a mirror opposite the junction would be a massive help. LCC have knocked us back on this before now but I feel that it is time to ask again."

He added, "The situation isn't helped because some people have been told that the end of Tottleworth Road is private parking, which it isn't. Anyone can park there and it would alleviate the crowding on Hermitage Street. That area is also covered by private CCTV which I will ask the police to review if there are any problems."
