BBC Radio Lancashire - Dyke Nook Gardens
Several weeks ago, Cllr Paul Cox entered Dyke Nook Gardens on Whalley Road, Accrington into a competition being run by BBC Radio Lancashire, in conjunction with the Royal Horticultural Society. The entry was successful and generated £500 to spend on the project. Local residents now intend to install lots of new features including raised beds, edibles roses, fruit bushes, trees, a fernery and a painting. BBC Radio Lancashire will be broadcasting live from the Gardens on Sunday 26th May and Sunday 2nd June on the Stephen Lowe Outdoor programme broadcast on Sundays 11 – 2pm.
There is also an historic connection with the garden, with Gertrude Jeykll (1843-1932), an influential horticulturalist, garden designer, artist and writer who is also credited with creating the herbaceous border.. She created over 400 gardens in the UK, Europe and America; her influence on garden design has been pervasive to this day. Miss Jeykill designed the garden of the original Dyke Nook house, which is no longer there. It is hoped to install a plaque on the current site to show the history.
Cllr Cox met with various residents on the site including Jean Sommerville (Laneside Residents Association), Cath Holmes and Yvonne Heap (Hyndburn Green Spaces forum), Katie Farnell (Incredible Edibles), Ian Hodgson (Hyndburn Prospects) along with Craig Haraben and Mark Gardner from the HBC Parks Department to discuss how an easily-maintained community space could be created. Hyndburn Homes have also confirmed they wish to come along and help in any way they can.
If you would like to support for this local community project then please come along on either of the broadcast dates and get hands on! Cllr Cox can be contacted using the details on the Your Councillors tab on the homepage of this blog.
