Huncoat: Activity Day at Spout House Wood - 15th March 2014

Lots of wonderful woodland activities will be on offer at a woodland activity day, set to take place on Saturday 15th March, at the new community woodland site at Spout House Wood in Huncoat.

The event, which will run from 10am until 1pm, is your chance to get involved and have fun whilst playing your part in making Huncoat history, as the creation of the woodland will form a lasting legacy for the whole community.

Come and plant some trees, which won’t be hard work as the trees are very small. There’ll be woodland craft demonstrations and later you can have a go at making crafty things yourself. People will also be able to find out more about trees in the existing woodland.

Meet at the meadow, across the playing fields from Bolton Avenue.  Welly boots essential!

Council Leader, Cllr Miles Parkinson, said; “The woodland activity day will be a fun filled day with something for everyone.  We want lots of people to come along to help to create a lasting legacy for the local area. Just think you could be walking through the woodland in years to come, telling your grandchildren about the trees you planted all those years ago.   There’ll also be other opportunities to stay involved, with on-going practical activities and a Friends group for the woodland.”

The project is collaboration between Hyndburn Borough Council, Lancashire County Council and Global Renewables, under the Woodlands from Waste programme which so far has planted over 100,000 trees across Lancashire. Carbon absorbed by the growth of the trees will help to balance the carbon emissions from the activities needed to dispose of our rubbish – so the project is good for the environment in lots of different ways.

The project has received support from a national organisation, the Forestry Commission, who has given a £28k grant from the English Woodland Grant Scheme.  Further grant bids are currently being prepared for paths and entrance improvements.
