The pupils, aged 12-13, asked questions they had prepared in their Citizenship lessons to the panel on issues within their area with topics including employment, education, town centres and leisure facilities.
Kate Murry, Head of RE, PSHE, citizenship at Hollins said; “The event really engaged our year 8 students and helped them to understand that even though they can't vote until they are 18 years old, they can still take part in our democracy and make a difference. We plan to run it again next year and try to make it possible for more pupils to get their questions answered; they had so many fantastic questions. We are really grateful for all the people who gave up their time to work with our young people.”
Council Leader, Cllr Miles Parkinson, said; “It was a great event, with year 8 pupils at Hollins taking part. It was all about engaging them in local democracy and we had a lively debate with plenty of interaction with the audience. Thank you to them and the panel for an interesting and enlightening afternoon.”
