Church: New £300k 3G football pitches unveiled

Pitches upgraded in a £330,000 project are being enjoyed by sports fans from across the borough. The new artificial grass pitch has been unveiled at Hyndburn Leisure Centre, in Henry Street, Church, and were officially opened on Saturday 21st March 2015.

Work began on the project, funded by the council and Sport England, in September. The sand-based astroturf was torn up, fencing was ripped out, and a new Fifa-rated surface was laid.

Council leader Miles Parkinson said, “It’s great news for Hyndburn. Our Playing Pitch Strategy identified a shortage of quality artificial pitches in Hyndburn which is why we have invested.”

Sport England’s Programme Lead Andy Couves said, “Sports facilities are a vital part of grassroots sport and we know people have a better experience of sport when they can play in good quality facilities. The investment being made into Hyndburn Leisure Centre will make a big difference to community sport and will ensure people and teams have a place to get active and enjoy sport all year round.”

Graham Jones MP said, “The old pitch had become unplayable and we need quality facilities in Hyndburn to encourage more people to take part in sport and physical activity.”

The facility is now open for use and available to hire from 9am until 10pm on weekdays, and from 9am until 5pm on weekends.

It is also set to host midnight leagues in the future in a bid to combat anti-social behaviour.

Accrington Girls and Ladies was the first team to use the pitch.

Secretary Carl Ellwood said, “The surface was excellent and we hope to make use of the pitch for the occasional match as well as regular training. We hope that improvements to facilities such as these will encourage more girls to join our club.”

The Accrington and District Junior Football League were present with matches being played in the morning, and youngsters interested in joining a team have been invited to talk to managers .

Leisure boss Ken Moss said, “I understand that pre-bookings for the pitch are already backing up and I would like to thank everyone involved.”
